Childhood Bedroom Refresh

Happy Wednesday y’all! SO excited to get around to finally sharing my Childhood Bedroom reveal and MAN is it a packed post. Back in May my mom decided we should update my childhood bedroom (aka now our guest bedroom) into a more homey space that I enjoyed since I discovered I would be here so long. For back story here, I live in a literal girl pad back in NYC with a pink couch and mauve purple bed, and having a space that speaks to you and makes you feel comfortable and at home is seriously so important during stressful times. The guest bedroom here was outdated with older decor because not many come to visit, and it had old furniture that really made it feel like it was a cramped, earth-toned space. We knew we didn’t want to do anything major, but there wasn’t any harm in getting a new comforter, a few new pieces to hang on the wall and some pink here and there.

The color palette. I figured we would get a few pops of pink and some faux plants, but once I started grabbing everything at different stores I realized quickly we were going for beiges, terra-cotta, and lighter shades of mauve. I wanted to stick with an earthy/neutral tone that would be easy to snap content in different spots of the room, but didn’t want the decor to completely overtake the vibe so that people wouldn’t want to sleep in here once I eventually leave. I like to think of it as grownup Kayleigh’s take on her childhood bedroom. We obviously kept the bed which thankfully has drawers underneath for storage, and I didn’t think we needed to invest in another nightstand so I got this super convenient contraption called the Bed Shelfie which holds both of my laptops, my planner and my water bottle when I go to bed. Great for smaller spaces and so affordable PLUS easy to install! It’s linked in the widget below.

Getting started. We started with just the comforter, baskets, curtains and pillows which soon took off into a DIY project with my old sewing desk. In high school I used to sew clothes and had a dream of being a fashion designer (lol), and my old desk was just sitting in our game room. My mom and I painted it with acrylic paint from Hobby Lobby and I took out the sliding drawer while my dad helped remove a top shelf so it was more of an even level space. I got marble contact paper off of Amazon and just barely had enough to (choppily) cover the desk. It now serves as a make shift vanity space and stores all of my makeup. Could I have gone without this? Yes. But when it comes to trying new products and creating content surrounding those products, you really do need a space where you can do it all.

The vanity. My vanity mirror was an early morning Amazon find. When I went to purchase it had sold out and I barely scored the last one on Lamps Plus. It’s by the brand Noble Park and it’s the Morrey Mirror if you’re ever able to find it once it resurfaces. I’ve linked similar styles in the details below, but I will likely ship this to NYC once I go back because it can definitely be used and is so chic. I also knew I wanted a floor mirror/larger mirror for try ons, and yes this is absolutely #bloggerproblems. We got this wooden mirror at Hobby Lobby on major sale and I love how it ties together with the color of the wood in the bed. It’s kind of scratched and you can tell when I do try ons, but it definitely serves it’s purpose.

ALSO I just got a new camera and am still playing out with the lens/settings – hence the plethora of photos in this post and the awkward lighting at points. Hoping to be able to function by the end of quarantine but must say I am proud of myself for some of these shots (definitely not all of them lol). Just need to learn that whole lighting issue.

What do y’all think? Can’t believe how this room has been completely transformed without anything major! It was definitely a fun project while I’ve been itching to redo some of my New York apartment. By the time I make it back, I won’t have enough of my lease left for it to be worth it! Let me know your thoughts on the new digs. Have a great day and thanks for reading!

Things that made the biggest difference in the room:
A white comforter (pictured in the image as gray) really brightened up the space and brought it back to 2020 (rather than the dated comforter we had).

Blush pink curtains set the stage for the pops of pink throughout the room without being overwhelming.

Mirrors on each side of the bed gave depth, but also kept the walls from looking bare.

Revamping my old sewing desk into a vanity using marble contact paper and a few coats of $4.99 acrylic paint from Hobby Lobby.

Adding baskets for softer elements like faux pampas grass and blankets to keep the earthy vibe going.
