20 Things I Learned in 2014

Happy (almost) New Year! 2014 was by far my best year yet,
and I can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store. I’m doing today’s post a tad
bit more personal than usual. Along with my NYE outfit post, I’m sharing the 20
most important things that 2014 taught me. I learned so many lessons through so
many different scenarios, and I hope that these inspire you to have a great new
year! PS my resolution for the next year? Embrace life, stay positive and
always dream big.
1.
True
friends show themselves during hard times.
I’ve known this for years, but
it always amazes me whose there for you during hard times. Hold onto those
people tight and don’t let them go, ever. A handful of my friends were the glue
that held me together this last semester.
2.
Never let
anyone tell you that you can’t.
I swear there’s always going to be someone
doubting you. Use it as motivation and try everything in your power to prove
them wrong. Nothing is more satisfying than proving the haters wrong.
3.
You can’t
please everyone.
This is so huge in 20-something’s lives and the blogger
world. There’s always going to be someone that doesn’t like the way you look,
dress, talk or act. The sooner you realize you can’t please every single
person, the happier you’ll be.
4.
Don’t
stress over the small things.
Did you text someone too many times once you
went out last night? Oh well. Don’t let the small things eat at you, especially
the ones that you can’t change. Ask yourself: will I be freaking out about this
in a year? If the answer is no then simply move on.
5.
Retail
therapy works.
Nothing is better than going to your favorite store after a
long day of work, fight with a friend or a break-up (especially a break up).
Buy those pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing, you’ll feel worlds better.
6.
Be
spontaneous.
The greatest nights I’ve had these past few months have been
the most spontaneous. Meet new people, stay out until six in the morning, go on
road trips, slide sown your stairs in a suitcase instead of studying for
finals, do what makes you happy and enjoy every second of it.
7.
If you
don’t like something in your life, change it.
Don’t like the way you look?
Change it. Don’t like the classes your in? Switch your major. You’re in charge
of your own happiness; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
8.
Erase
anything or anyone toxic from your life, now.
Boy, this has been a major
lesson for me this year. Never let anyone hurt you, take advantage of you,
guilt you or walk all over you. If you have anyone like that in your life, get
him or her out now and block them on everything possible. Toxic people only
hold you back from living the life you want and deserve. (Cue T. Swift’s Bad
Blood).
9.
Reward
yourself.
This is something that I thrive in. After big projects,
collaborations or anything exciting I’ll reward myself with something. Whether
it’s a new pair of shoes or a Pazookie at BJ’s I always have something.
10.  Be
open-minded.
Something that’s constantly a struggle for me-the more
optimistic you are, the happier you are, it’s a very simple concept. Try not
passing judgment and giving people and situations a chance first.
11.  Learn from your mistakes. Alas, another big
lesson for me this year. Everyone makes mistakes; just don’t waste them. If you
make a mistake, accept it and learn from it, and then move on. Learn to think
on your feet to avoid making mistakes in the future.
12.  Work
hard; play harder.
I’ve always typically been a hard worker, but this past
semester really taught me to work hard and play even harder. No story started
with a night you got plenty of sleep, right?
13.  Go
the extra mile.
In the end, it’s so much better to go above and beyond
expectations to make someone else’s life easier.
14.  Celebrate everything.
My favorite Kate Spade quote is “We believe in celebrations, both big
and small.” Whether it’s a good grade, end of a class or a job offer, always
celebrate the positive things in life. It makes achieving things so much more
fun.
15.  Embrace change. Life is full of constant
changes. Don’t worry about them, instead run towards them. The sooner you
embrace difference in your life the better.
16.  Learn
to forgive.
Another issue I struggle with. However, it feels like the world
is lifted from your shoulders the second you decide to forgive someone, but remember
who does you wrong in the future. Never forget.
17.  Go
with your gut.
It’s like that saying “If it looks like a duck and walks
like a duck…” If you have a gut feeling, go with it. You’re usually always
right.
18.  Do
what makes you happy and forget
everyone else.
This goes back to many points I’ve previously stated. For
starters, you’re in charge of your own happiness; never let anyone take that
away. People will always have their judgment and opinions, but if something
makes you happy then you should do it. Whether it’s something short lived or
long term, jump headfirst if it makes you smile.
19.  Never take anything for granted, ever. Something
that is so important in life. People are here one day and gone the next and you
never realize it until it happens to you. Call your parents often, hug your
friends when you see them and never take any opportunity given to you for
granted.

20.  Let
go and let God.
Cliché, but so true. Stop trying to force your
fate-something I’m horrible with. If God wanted it in your life he would have
put it in your path. His plan for us is so much greater than anything we could
imagine, and we need to start trusting him more and worrying less about the
outcome. He’s got it under control, so might as well let it be!
